Beat Belly Fat and Beat Diabetes! from gracebakya's blog

While overweight and obesity 11-Day Diabetes Fix  increase the risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, not all overweight or obese individuals develop this condition. Type 2 diabetes develops when the body becomes insensitive to insulin, and belly fat has much to do with causing the insensitivity.

According to a study published in September 2012 in the journal Diabetology and Metabolic Syndrome, larger than average fat cells in the abdomen could be an important factor.

Thirty-two non-obese close relatives of people with Type 2 diabetes were included in the study. An oral glucose tolerance test, like the one given to pregnant women to test for Gestational diabetes, was given, along with measurements of insulin levels and fat biopsies.

Participants with large fat cells taken from their bellies showed insulin resistance and high levels of molecules associated with insulin insensitivity and Type 2 diabetes.

From this information, it was concluded obesity in itself is not necessarily associated with Type 2 diabetes, but fat tissue with large cells functioning incorrectly is likely the culprit.

Having a fat biopsy and looking for molecules normally measured only in research studies is clearly not practical for most of us, but the study underscores the importance of minimizing belly fat. Anyone who saw or read "Gone with the Wind" might remember Rhett Butler losing his pot belly when he took up walking around Atlanta to show off his new daughter. Margaret Mitchell had the right idea.
