Even though many of us live very busy lives, we tend to sit more and walk or run or ride our bikes less, not realizing that our bodies need to be active in order for them to function at their peak. Exercise should not only target specific areas, but the whole body. This is Mike approach. Further, when exercising the whole body, "endurance conditioning", such as marathons are not favored. What is favored is "variable cyclic training", which refers to conditioning performed in bursts of exertion followed by a period of recovery. This can also be expressed as "stop and go movement" versus "steady state movement" (like endurance conditioning).
