Demand for recycled corrugated booms

Global interest in used and recycled corrugated boxes has surged in the past year, with increases of 115% and 92% respectively, according to UK packaging supplier Sadlers. Sadlers, a retailer specialising in both new and used cardboard boxes, has seen a 29% year-on-year increase in the number of companies disposing of surplus cardboard boxes through its 2023 reuse scheme. Google Trends data shows that in the US, interest in used cartons has increased by 352% from July 2022 to June 2023. In the UK, used cardboard has continued to grow in popularity, with an overall increase of 110%.

"The surge in interest in our used cardboard products not only underlines the growing desire of other businesses to align their operations with sustainable practices, but also highlights the power of economic influence in driving environmental change," said Lauren Sadler, Head of Sustainability & Communications at Sadlers.

"The company has grown steadily over the last 15 years and experienced an industry-wide growth boom during the Covid pandemic," she added. "With the widely reported shortage of cardboard, Sadlers was well placed to provide a solution in the form of used boxes; reusing existing material was not subject to the production stoppages that occurred during the crisis. The popularity of re-using boxes grew from there".

The family-owned company operates a stock purchase scheme, buying redundant and surplus stock from manufacturers and distributors throughout Western Europe. At the same time, it maintains its position as the UK's largest processor of used cardboard.

"For many companies, the first instinct is to scrap things like used cardboard sheets and layer pads, but we have created a re-use market for this material," continues Sadler. "At a time when financial forecasting and budgeting for some organisations is more worrying than it has been for decades, it's important that more companies are aware that they can make money back by selling used or obsolete packaging stock."

Three-layer corrugated cardboard with wave profile E (micro corrugated cardboard) has a thickness of up to 1.3 mm. It is used in the production of small or laminated packaging with light and medium weight. It is extremely suitable for punching and can produce an unlimited variety of constructions and designs. Three-layer corrugated cardboard with wave profile B – 3 mm thick is used for medium-sized packages and cardboard boxes with a product weight of up to 10 – 15 kg. It has very good resistance to pressure.

Three-layer corrugated cardboard with wave profile C – 4 mm thick, can withstand loads weighing 20 kg. It is very durable and can be used to make large cardboard boxes, laminated and punched products. The four-layer corrugated cardboard consists of one outer, one inner straight layer and two folded intermediate ones and is used for lamination. The five-layer corrugated cardboard consists of three straight and two intermediate pleated layers of paper. The five-layer corrugated cardboard, which combines C and E profile waves, is 5 mm thick and is the preferred material due to its high strength and high print quality, which gives it a very attractive commercial appearance.

Colors that “POP” – Flexographic inks without costly varnishes added can look rather flat. Printing any color on white board makes the color brighter, compared to printing on kraft which can make colors look darker and sometimes “muddier”.
Color consistency, especially on flood coats – If you look at any brown (kraft) boxes you will see the brown varies from box to box. Natural kraft colored board is not consistent in color, and the difference is even greater on higher recycled content board. The result is any color printed on it, especially lighter pastels, will vary as well. White board delivers more even, consistent colors.
White board is typically a board upgrade so it may feature stronger/thicker top and bottom sheets, as well as a stronger fluted middle or medium.
How much white does your application require – you can get one side white, both sides white or for a clean, bright look, even triple white corrugated board.
For RSC style boxes, kraft in and kraft out remains the most common board combination. However, for die cut mailers which represent over 80% of our business, kraft out and white inside is unquestionably the most popular. Keep in mind we usually do not recommend spending a lot of money on exterior graphics. That outside surface gets beat up in shipment and is covered up with tape, labels, etc., which is even worse on a small box when the graphics may be obscured by the standard 4” X 6” or larger, 4” X 8” shipping label.

What is fluting?
In cardboard boxes, fluting is formed by the arched shapes (flutes) that create space between layers of cardboard. Fluting helps make cardboard boxes durable and protect any contents inside.

Flutes are available in different sizes (measured by flute height, which dictates how thick a cardboard box’s walls are) and densities (measured by flute grammage, which shows how dense the paper in a box’s walls is ).
Single wall cardboard boxes have walls that contain one layer of fluting. In other words, each box is made up of three layers – an outer layer of paper + a single layer of flute + an outer layer of paper. These boxes are lightweight and suitable for products of average weight and fragility. DS Smith’s single wall boxes have a thickness of 3 mm and can ship and store packages with a maximum weight of 10 Kg (or 5 Kg if sent on pallets).

Double wall cardboard boxes feature walls with two layers of fluting. Each double wall box is made up of five layers – an outer layer of paper + a layer of flute + a layer of paper + another layer of flute + an outer layer of paper. These boxes are stronger and more durable than single wall boxes, so they are more suited to heavier items or products that need additional protection and cushioning. DS Smith’s double wall boxes have a thickness of 5mm, and can support up a weight of up to 20 Kg (or 10 Kg if shipped on pallets).
