Yale and Emtek, two smart lock companies under the umbrella of the lock conglomerate Assa Abloy, are debuting new smart door locks sporting August’s software. Assa Abloy acquired August back in 2017, but these are the first third-party smart locks that can directly use August’s software without needing external hardware. Back in 2018, August added support for Yale locks, but that required you to purchase a module from Yale that you had to install yourself.best mortise lock brand

Starting with Emtek’s offerings, the thoughtfully named EMPowered Smart Lock Keypad Deadbolt and the Smart Lock for Deadbolt / Entryset are available for $440 and $390, respectively. With August’s software on board, you’ll be able to control the EMPowered smart door locks with your smartphone or through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
Regarding launch dates, the keypad version of Emtek’s smart lock will be available in February, while the deadbolt version will launch in April.

Yale’s Assure Lever smart lock differs from Emtek’s locks as it’s designed for single-hole doors, side doors, basements, and interior rooms, instead of being used for your front door. It comes in keyed and key-free versions as well as keypad and capacitive touchscreen versions (supporting four to eight digit custom PINs), so you have a few different options of how you’ll be able to unlock or lock your door. Yale’s smart locks can also be fully integrated into a smart home or alarm system if you purchase one of the three supported add-on modules: the Connected by August, Z-Wave Plus, or Zigbee’s Yale Smart Module.

Updated It's something we all do when we get home: rummage around in your pockets or bag, find your keys, identify the one you want and then stick it in your front door to gain access.vivint door lock code change

If you are one of the roughly 28 per cent of households that have a security system, you then need to go punch in a code to turn the alarm off. It's something we do so often it becomes instinctual. Which is what makes all that much stranger when you find yourself no longer doing it.

Nest is still best known for its smart thermostat but faced with growing competition and pressure to expand its product line, back in September it announced it was going to expand into security products: a doorbell, alarm system and a smart lock.

The alarm system came out almost immediately but it wasn't until last month that the doorbell – called the Nest Hello – and the door lock – called the, um, "Nest x Yale Lock" entered the market.

We have been testing them both for a couple of weeks, both by themselves and in conjunction with other Nest products – including its security system and smart camera. But we're going to focus on the lock right now because it seems the most significant.

And the reason for that is quite simple: a few days ago, this reviewer took his front door key off the bunch of keys that reside in the jeans pocket.

It was more of a psychological test than anything else: the key is useless because the Nest+Yale lock doesn't have a key slot, just a keypad. Currently, there is no other way to get into our house than through this lock (well, apart from breaking or jamming open a window).

Of all the smart home gadgets out there, smart locks are some of the best problem-solvers when it comes to everyday annoyances. Forget your keys? No problem. Need to unlock the door to let in a friend or service provider? Easy-peasy. Forgot to lock the door before heading into bed? Don't you worry. door lock system using bluetooth

With a smart lock at your door, you can manage all of that with an easy voice command or the tap of a button, offering you security, convenience, automation and peace of mind. But which smart lock is right for you?
Picking the best smart lock for your home depends on a few things. For some, scheduling and user code limits will be important. For others, having a door lock that can be retrofit and not replace the deadbolt on the door is a must-have. We've tested the best smart locks on the market today and these are our favorites.

Disclosure: CNET may get a share of revenue from the sale of the products featured on this page. The $279 August Smart Lock Pro + Connect bundle includes a retrofit August Smart Lock Pro, a Connect Wi-Fi module and a DoorSense open/close sensor.

This August smart lock supports the Z-Wave wireless protocol (smart hub not included) and works with Apple HomeKit. With the Wi-Fi module set up, you'll get Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant compatibility, as well as remote access to your lock for when you're not home.

The Smart Lock Pro is a capable, easy-to-install smart lock and the winner of our CNET Editors' Choice Award. August's $219 third-generation Smart Lock + Connect bundle comes with a DoorSense open/close sensor and Connect Wi-Fi module. The low profile, retrofit design means you won't need to replace your deadbolt, making it great for renters.

The August Smart Lock with the Connect setup works with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa and is controllable remotely through the August mobile app. You won't get Apple HomeKit compatibility or Z-Wave smarts to connect to a smart hub. Still, this August Smart Lock is a moderately priced, capable smart door lock. Yale's SL Touchscreen Deadbolt has a small, sleek design with a touchscreen keypad that looks good on nearly every door, and it comes in three finishes. The newest $299 bundle includes August smarts with a Connected by August Kit (Wi-Fi module and DoorSense sensors) to connect with the August app, and it works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and HomeKit.

There's also a version with interchangeable modules for Zigbee or Z-Wave if you need to connect your door lock to a smart home hub. Those modules cost $50 each.

Let’s face it – the golden age of flight is over. Sure, we can get around the world with relative ease, with all but the most far-flung and remote locations accessible by air. But unless you’ve paid for the first class, premium experience you’re going to be about as comfortable as a cow in an overheating barn.

So it’s becoming ever-more important to be able to enjoy air travel with as little extra stress as is possible, able to bring your prized entertainment gadgets along for the ride and keeping them easily at hand and fully charged.rebel sports gym bag

The answer to super-smooth travel? Smart luggage. Here’s what you need to know.So-called smart luggage includes cases and bags designed to keep your gadgets charged while you travel.

At their most basic, they’ll include a rechargeable battery pack that can be used to power your devices on the go, and at their most advanced they may include a GPS luggage tracker, putting your mind at ease as to the location of your baggage as it travels alongside you.

Some brands, such as Horizn Studios even include a personalised travel service, managing bookings and reservations on your behalf.

While not strictly tech-infused, gadget-friendly backpacks and rucksacks can also be a lifesaver when travelling, with secret pockets for valuables and dedicated pouches putting gadgets easily within reach when you’re rushing through security. However, the rise of smart luggage has not been a straightforward one. With airports on high alert due to never ending terrorism threats and passenger safety paramount, some earlier attempts at smart luggage have been banned on flights.

Remember the exploding Samsung Galaxy Note 7 debacle? Or flaming hoverboards? They’re to blame – with airlines unable to verify the safety of onboard batteries, luggage that contained lithium-ion batteries were banned from the hold – and in the case of some airlines, from being taken onboard as hand luggage too.

Major airlines like American Airlines, Delta and Alaska Airlines have all put restrictions on smart luggage. But all is not lost, provided you know what you’re travelling with.

So what can, and can’t, you take on board? Essentially, if you buy a suitcase that has a removable battery pack onboard, you should be fine – they’re allowed in the cabin and, so long as you eject the battery before check in, they can be stored in the hold, too.

However, some airlines are still a little touchy about cases with battery compartments built in, so just to be on the safe side, eject your battery pack before you go through security even if you’re taking it as carry on luggage.

We announced last month we had signed an agreement to purchase the Mobrey line of measurement products from Emerson, the U.S.-headquartered global technology and engineering company.CFB Boiler

A key product in the Mobrey product range, which is now exclusively distributed by us, prior to full acquisition, is the Hydrastep 2468 Electronic Gauging System for steam drum level measurement.
The Hydrastep technology was a customer-led development and its history spans over five decades. Nowadays, the Hydrastep 2468 is seen by many as an industry standard and its reliability is second to none. To date, the Hydrastep 2468 has been installed in over 6,000 critical applications globally, including power stations, refineries, petrochemical plants and sugar refineries – in fact everywhere where steam boiler water feed levels are critical for safety. Any steam raising plant will use steam drums, and these steam drums require accurate and reliable level measurement to ensure the safety of the plant.

One such example is in a new 400,000 tonne capacity waste management plant in France. The waste treatment plant was already using differential pressure (DP) transmitters to measure and control the level within their two steam drums. However, after a recent review, the plant’s insurers were concerned that if the DCS was to fail, the DP measurement would be lost and there would be no way of knowing the level within the steam drum. This could lead to the steam drum running dry, or rising level and water entering the steam turbine, both critically dangerous situations.

The insurers insisted on an additional measurement on the steam drum which would be independent of the DCS. The plant’s insurers required that the plant upgrade their safety related instrumentation throughout the site and approached Mobrey for a solution. The Hydrastep system was fitted to each steam drum to ensure the continual measurement of the steam drum level, with remote displays and alarms in the control room for indication, independent of the DCS.

One of the most dangerous situations in the operation of a boiler is that of a fuel explosion in the furnace. The photo above shows the complete devastation of a utility boiler.

Conditions have to be just right for an explosion to occur and when a boiler is properly operated, it is not possible for such an event to take place. The most common causes of a fuel explosion are:hrsg boiler

Fuel-rich mixtures - The danger of a fuel-rich mixture is that high concentrations of unburned fuel can build up. When this unburned fuel ignites, it can do so in a very rapid or explosive manner. Fuel-rich mixtures can occur any time that insufficient air is supplied for the amount of fuel being burned. Never add air to a dark smoky furnace. Trip the unit, purge thoroughly, then correct the problem. By adding air with a fire in the unit, you may develop an explosive mixture. While it is dangerous to have too rich a mixture, the reverse is not true. A lean mixture which results in more air than necessary, while not efficient, is not dangerous.

Poor atomization of oil - Just as fuel-rich mixtures could allow accumulation of unburned combustibles, any inventory of a combustible fuel in the furnace can result in an explosion. Boilers are blown up every year as a result of poor atomization of oil which results in incomplete combustion and can lead to unburned oil puddling on the floor of the furnace. To prevent this, the oil tips must be clean, the oil temperature must be correct, the oil viscosity must be in spec, and the atomizing steam (or air) pressure and fuel oil pressure must be properly adjusted.

Improper purge - Many of the explosions occur after a combustion problem which has resulted in a burner trip. Consider the following example: suppose that the oil tip becomes plugged, which disturbs the spray pattern, causing an unstable flame that results in a flame failure. The operator attempts to relight the burner without investigating the cause and during successive attempts to relight the burner, oil is sprayed into the furnace.

The oil on the hot furnace floor begins to volatize and release its combustible gases when the operator initiates another trial for ignition. The pilot then ignites the large inventory of unburned combustible gases in the furnace, which produces the explosion.

The drum level must be controlled to the limits specified by the boiler manufacturer. If the drum level does not stay within these limits, there may be water carryover. If the level exceeds the limits, boiler water carryover into the superheater or the turbine may cause damage resulting in extensive maintenance costs or outages of either the turbine or the boiler. If the level is low, overheating of the water wall tubes may cause tube ruptures and serious accidents, resulting in expensive repairs, downtime, and injury or death to personnel. A rupture or crack most commonly occurs where the tubes connect to the drum. Damage may be a result of numerous or repeated low drum level conditions where the water level is below the tube entry into the drum.Boiler Steam Drum

flow 1Some companies have had cracked or damaged water tubes as a result of time delayed trips or operators having a trip bypass button. When the drum level gets too low, the boiler must have a boiler trip interlock to prevent damage to the tubes and cracks in the tubes where they connect to the boiler drum. The water tubes may crack or break where they connect to the drum, or the tubes may rupture resulting in an explosion. The water tube damage may also result in water leakage and create problems with the drum level control. The water leakage will affect the drum level because not all the water going into the drum is producing steam.

Poor level control also has an effect on drum pressure control. The feedwater going into the drum is not as hot as the water in the drum. Adding feedwater too fast will result in a cooling effect in the boiler drum reducing drum pressure and causing boiler level shrinkage. This can be demonstrated by pouring tap water into a pan of boiling water.
Shrink and swell must be considered in determining the control strategy of a boiler. During a rapid increase in load, a severe increase in level may occur. Shrink and swell is a result of pressure changes in the drum changing water density. The water in the drum contains steam bubbles similar to when water is boiled in our homes. During a rapid increase in load, a severe rise in level may occur because of an increase in volume of the bubbles. This increased volume is the result of a drop in steam pressure from the load increase and the increase in steam generation from the greater firing rate to match the load increase (i.e., bubbles expand). If the level in the drum is too high at this time, it may result in water carryover into the superheater or the turbine. The firing rate cycle can result in drum pressure cycles. The drum pressure cycles will cause a change in drum level.
The firing rate change has an effect on drum level, but the most significant cause of shrink and swell is rapid changes in drum pressure expanding or shrinking the steam bubbles due to load changes. When there is a decrease in demand, the drum pressure increases and the firing rate changes, thus reducing the volume of the bubbles (i.e., bubbles get smaller). A sudden loss in load could result in high drum pressure causing shrinkage severe enough to trip the boiler on low level. A boiler trip at high firing rates creates a furnace implosion. If the implosion is severe enough, the boiler walls will be damaged due to high vacuum in the furnace.
