"What we're seeing is there will be a new normal that will involve thermal screening as a frontline tool," Chris Bainter, director of global business development at FLIR Systems, told CBS News' Jericka Duncan. FLIR has been producing thermal imaging cameras since the SARS epidemic in 2003, when it gained widespread use in Asia.
Since the outbreak, companies like Flexible Systems, Thermal Guardian, CrowdRx and many more have begun manufacturing the cameras for use in airports, healthcare centers and even apartment buildings in New York, where the pandemic has hit particularly hard. A store in Georgia, City Farmer's Market, has already set up thermal imaging cameras to scan customers as they enter the store.
If a customer's temperature is above 100.4 degrees, they are given a flyer that asks them to leave to protect others, and offers that the store does their shopping for them.The key is that application is not about an absolute temperature measurement. It's more about detecting those individuals with elevated body temperature higher than the last 10 people that had been screened," Bainter explained.
Bainter, who predicted the camera could play "a critical role" in reopening the economy, dismissed any privacy concerns or worries that this specific technology could be a gateway to "surveillance culture."
"If you've seen a thermal image… you can't really detect exactly who that individual is," he said. "We aren't really focused on collecting data of any sort, it's more about as a screening tool."
However, he cautioned the screening tool "doesn't detect coronavirus," and called for further precautions to be taken before businesses could be deemed safe.

According to his online diary, Payton Gendron and Clark – a customer service specialist for the Iowa-based body armor manufacturer RMA Armament – interacted over a period of months on both the public social media site Reddit and in a private chatroom for weapons enthusiasts.
A Buffalo News review of nearly 3,200 posts Clark made on Reddit, as well as related marketing activity on platforms including YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Discord, show that RMA has for years marketed military-grade body armor to civilian buyers ranging from firearms hobbyists to doomsday preppers.
Under the username shorta07, Clark promoted RMA as one of “very few manufacturers” to sell directly to the public. He has suggested buyers circumvent civilian body armor restrictions in one state and advised Reddit users on the types of body armor that protect against military bullets.

“Vests are not only critical resources for the protection of our officers, they are required components of their uniforms and are worn by every officer on a daily basis,” APD Chief Mike Lee said in a news release. “We apply for every grant that we can to fund safety equipment.”
The new hires will bring APD to 108 members and is budgeted to employ 110 people.The Safety Board approved the hiring of three new officers in September.

SKZ is known for its capabilities in traditional thermoplastic processing. Going forward, however, cross-linking plastics such as LSR will play a more prominent role for SKZ. Professor Martin Bastian (Head of the Institute) and Georg Schwalme (Head of Injection Moulding) recently selected KraussMaffei as their technology partner for silicone processing.
KraussMaffei reports that the team at Toolcraft had made separate enquiries about processing LSR around the same time - and so the IMM manufacturer took the opportunity to connect all three groups.
It's not KraussMaffei's first mission to enlighten processors on the possibilities that come with mastering the technique. Last year, the group held a virtual event, dedicated to liquid silicone rubber processing. In one talk, experts acknowledged the challenges associated with fluctuating viscosities, which can lead to inconsistencies in part quality.
Using a reusable coffee cup lid, the KraussMaffei team, together with the mould maker ACH Solution, demonstrated the feasibility of moulding two different versions of the lid in one mould, and in one shot. KraussMaffei said its APC plus (adaptive process control) function is designed to deal with fluctuating material viscosities, with adaptive colour metering being one such solution.
LSR is especially popular in the medical sector. Another talk at last year's digital event focussed on the current trends in this market - and indeed, the first product to be created under the KraussMaffei-Toolcraft-SKZ collaboration will be a medical application with a part weight of 0.5 grams.
