Ant Group Co.’s valuation may be cut further under new measures proposed
by China to curb market concentration in its online payments market,

Jack Ma’s fintech giant may be worth less than 700 billion yuan ($108 billion) under the draft proposals, which could reduce the value of Ant’s Alipay service by half, according to senior analyst Francis Chan. Earlier this month, Chan lowered his Ant valuation to less than 1 trillion yuan, from about 1.44 trillion yuan.
“Ant Group’s valuation may plunge further if its payment unit is forced to break up due to potential anti-trust probes by China’s central bank,” Chan wrote in a research note.
The revised estimate for Ant is a far cry from valuations that ran as high as $320 billion before the company was forced to scrap its record initial public offering in November. China’s crackdown forced Ma’s firm to withdraw the $35 billion IPO just days before its planned listing in Hong Kong and Shanghai.
China’s central bank said on Wednesday that any non-bank payment company with half the market share for online transactions, or two entities with a combined two-thirds share could be subject to antitrust probes.
If a monopoly is confirmed, the central bank can suggest the cabinet impose restrictive measures including breaking up the entity by its business type. Firms already with payment licenses would have a one-year grace period to comply with the new rules, the central bank said.

Egypt started on Sunday vaccinating medical staff with Chinese Sinopharm
COVID-19 vaccine at a hospital in the northeastern province of
Ismailia, according to a vaccination program by the Egyptian Health
Ministry.

The minister explained that clinical trials have proved Sinopharm vaccine is safe and highly effective in COVID-19 prevention, especially "in prevention of COVID-19 infection with severe symptoms."
She added that Sinopharm vaccine has been registered at the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) and other vaccines from China, Britain and Russia will be registered within days.
Egypt received on Dec. 10, 2020 the first batch of Sinopharm vaccine, and the vaccine was officially licensed for emergency use later in the same month, after going through four tests conducted by the EDA.
The vaccination program starts with the medical staff of the hospitals of the Egyptian Health Ministry, the armed forces and the police.
"Starting from tomorrow, the medical staff of all Egyptian public hospitals, and those of the armed forces and the police, will start receiving these vaccines," Zayed told reporters.
The priorities, according to the vaccination campaign, are given to medical staff dealing with COVID-19 patients, followed by those dealing with other patients, the elderly, those with chronic or immunity diseases, and the rest of the citizens.
Zayed noted that Egypt has already reserved more than 100 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines from different providers.
The minister said that she has gone through the clinical trial of the vaccine, as a message of reassurance and encouragement to all citizens.
Among the first medics to receive Sinopharm vaccine in Egypt was Abdel-Moneim Selim, a trainee physician at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Abu Khalifa Emergency Hospital in Ismailia.
"I was asked 10 days ago if I agree to take the vaccine and I have already made up my mind to do it. It is a safe vaccine and it was tried by many people before us. I recommend everyone to take the vaccine whenever possible, whether a medic or not, and whether old or young," the ICU doctor told reporters.

Silver markets initially gapped a little bit lower to kick off the trading session on Tuesday but then turned around to show signs of strength again. At 10:46 GMT, March WTI crude oil futures are trading $53.38, up $0.14 or +0.26% and March Brent crude oil is at $56.68, up $0.10 or +0.18%. Both contracts are off their highs and in a position to form a potentially bearish technical reversal.
Rising coronavirus cases are grabbing the headlines, but may not be having that great of an effect on crude oil prices. Prices may not be declining on the news, but we can‘t determine that it’s not limiting gains.
We do know that prices are higher than they were when the impact of COVID-19 started to hit the U.S. economy last March although demand is still well off levels at that time. The divergence suggests that buyers are betting heavily that the virus will eventually be contained and the vaccines are going to work.

The American Petroleum Institute (API) reported late Tuesday a draw in crude oil inventories of 5.821 million barrels for the week ending January 8. Analysts were looking for an inventory draw of 2.266 million barrels for the week.
The API also reported a build in gasoline inventories of 1.876 million barrels for the week ending January 8 – compared to the previous weeks 5.473-million-barrel build. Analysts had expected a 2.695-million-barrel build for the week.
Distillate inventories also saw another large increase of 4.433 million barrels for the week, compared to last weeks 7.136-million-barrel increase, while Cushing inventories fell this week by 232,000 barrels.
Daily Forecast
Prices are still be buoyed by Saudi Arabias offer last week to single-handedly and voluntarily cut another 1 million barrels per day off its oil production in February and March.
In my opinion, buyers are reacting to this news as if there is no real downside risk because they believe OPEC+ will make adjustments to production to meet any significant demand changes, if necessary.
Traders will have the opportunity to react to the Energy Information Administration (EIA) weekly inventories report at 15:30 GMT. It is expected to show a 2.7 million barrel drawdown.
